Why Your Vehicle Matters

When you donate your vehicle to Adult & Teen Challenge of Northeastern Wisconsin (ATCNEW), you’re doing more than giving away a car—you’re giving someone a chance at a new life. Whether used by program graduates for transportation or sold through local car auctions, every donation helps sustain the operations of our ministry and ensures long-term success for those overcoming addiction.

100% of your vehicle donation proceeds directly support the care and recovery of men battling addiction through our faith-based, long-term residential program.

Repairs

Some vehicles are repaired and provided to graduates in the reentry phase, offering them reliable transportation to work, attend church, and reconnect with family. Your generosity helps us propel our mission forward—breaking the cycle of addiction and setting our residents on a path to lasting restoration. Every vehicle donated becomes a vehicle for hope.

ATCNEW can currently only accept mechanically drivable donated vehicles. You’ll also receive a tax-deductible in-kind receipt at the time of pickup or drop-off.

Car Donation Tax Laws?

When you donate to ATCNEW, we ensure you qualify for the highest IRS deduction available. For more on current deduction laws, please visit the IRS website: www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/charitable-organizations/irs-guidance-explains-rules-for-vehicle-donations.

Tax laws concerning donations have changed. Donors were once able to claim the fair market value (according to Kelley Blue Book) of the car or truck, regardless of what it sold for.

Currently, the IRS allows a standard deduction of $500 for any donated car or truck. Once ATCNEW receives the donation and title, our representatives will send you a tax receipt.

If your car or truck sells at auction for more than $500, then you may take the amount it sold for as your tax deduction. We will notify you via email or a letter in the mail of the amount and request your Social Security Number, which the IRS requires for the Tax Form 1098C (aka your tax deduction receipt).

How should I fill out my Wisconsin title?

To transfer your vehicle, sign and date Section 1 on the back of your title and write 'ATC of NEW INC.' as the buyer. For additional help, call 920-930-2444.

Our organization works diligently to ensure you receive the maximum amount based on your vehicle’s age, condition, and location to determine the best sales venue.

To learn more about what you are entitled to claim, please review the tax laws page on the IRS website.

*Donors must itemize their taxes to claim the deduction.

We recommend consulting with a qualified tax professional to ensure compliance with IRS requirements as they apply to your specific donation and circumstances.

Do I need an appraisal for high-value donations?

The IRS requires a third-party appraisal if your donation is worth more than $5,000. Visit: irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p561.pdf for more details on appraisals.

How much can I claim on my taxes for donating a vehicle?

You can deduct up to $500 or the amount your vehicle sells for, if higher. Learn more on IRS deductions here: irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1098c.pdf.

Is Form 1098C required?

You are not required to complete Form 1098C, but ATCNEW will provide one if the sale exceeds $500. The IRS format is available at https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1098-c.

Will I receive a receipt showing how much my vehicle sold for?

Yes. We’ll send your initial receipt upon donation. If your car sells for over $500, we’ll also send a final receipt showing the exact amount, once we have your SSN for IRS Form 1098C.

What date will be on my donation receipt?

The official donation date will be when you sign over the title or submit your vehicle to ATCNEW.

Can I get an estimate of what my vehicle will sell for?

We can give general pricing ranges based on past sales at dealer-only auctions, but no final value can be guaranteed due to condition and market fluctuation.

Do residents at ATCNEW repair donated vehicles?

Some vehicles are repaired depending on condition. Residents may help evaluate, detail, or assist in minor repairs as part of their job readiness training.

How quickly can my vehicle be arranged to be dropped off or picked up?

Typically, within five business days after we receive your complete donation info, not including holidays.

Do I need my vehicle title to donate?

Yes, we require a title from the last registered owner. If missing, visit the DMV site: https://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/online-srvcs/title-veh.aspx for a replacement.

Does ATCNEW resell donated vehicles?

Yes. Most donations are sold through wholesale dealer auctions to fund our operating recovery services.

Can my donation help a program resident?

Yes! ATCNEW will use some of its vehicle donations to provide starter vehicles for residents who need them in the transitional reentry phase of their program. This will help equip them with reliable transportation as they return to the workforce. Depending on each resident's circumstances, the vehicle may be provided for an affordable small fee not exceeding $500.

Can I keep my new tires?

Your donated vehicle must have tires and wheels that roll to ensure we can safely load and transport the vehicle. If you have new tires on the vehicle that you wish to keep, place an alternate set of tires on the vehicle before pickup.
